Charged by Wix after you cancelled?

It happened to me. Wix charged me CA$379.68 for a plan it had confirmed in writing was cancelled. I'm collecting other people's experiences to see how common this is.

What happened to me

  1. September 21, 2025I cancelled my Wix plan. Wix emailed me the same day: "auto renew for the Basic plan has been turned off."
  2. The same dayMy site was transferred into my account from another Wix account (how Wix handles a transfer). Somewhere along the way, auto-renew was switched back on. I didn't do it, I never meant to renew, and Wix never told me.
  3. The next 12 monthsNo renewal reminder. No receipt. Nothing.
  4. September 26, 2026Wix charged my Visa CA$379.68 for two more years, 19 days before the new term was due to start.
  5. October 16, 2026I asked for a refund with the cancellation email as proof. It was denied about two hours later, with no reason given.
  6. NowI've disputed the charge with my card issuer and filed a complaint with the Better Business Bureau.

This page is on my own website. It used to be a Wix site. I moved it off Wix before any of this happened.

A casualty of AI?

Wix built its business on one promise: you don't need a developer to have a website. AI now keeps that promise for anyone. I rebuilt this site with an AI agent over New Year's 2026, and hosting it costs me nothing.

The market has noticed. Wix stock lost more than half its value in the first half of 2026. In May it missed profit expectations, with margins squeezed by the cost of its own AI push. Investors have since sued its executives, claiming they overstated how well that push was going. Financial press called Wix the latest victim of the AI trade.

Over the same stretch, published renewal complaints went from about 2 a month to about 10.

I can't prove one caused the other. But a company under that kind of pressure has every reason to hold on to renewal money, and from where I sit, that's exactly what it looks like.

What helps

If you're on Wix

  • Check Premium Subscriptions and confirm auto-renew is off, especially after a site transfer or plan change.
  • Screenshot the page showing auto-renew off, and keep every cancellation email.
  • Expect renewal charges up to a month before your renewal date, not on it.
  • Don't leave a card on file you don't need.

If you're planning to leave, build the exit first

Wix's own Terms say that if you dispute a charge with your bank, your whole account can be blocked and your domains cancelled (section 6.5). People report losing their site, domain and business email that way. So get out before you fight:

  • Rebuild your site somewhere else first. A Wix site can't be moved: it "must run on Wix's servers."
  • Move your domain and business email to another provider.
  • If customers pay you through Wix Payments, switch to another payment processor and let your pending payouts clear.
  • Then turn off auto-renew, screenshot it, and keep the confirmation email.
  • Only then, if Wix won't refund you, dispute the charge.

Type in your website, copy one prompt into Claude Code, Codex or Cursor, and it walks you through the move in this order.

If you've already been charged

  • Ask Wix for a refund in writing, with your proof attached. People report getting a "one-time exception" after pushing past the first no.
  • If that fails, dispute the charge with your card issuer and send the same proof. Act quickly: card disputes have time limits (for Visa, generally 120 days for a cancelled recurring charge).
  • File complaints too (see below). One complaint is a customer service problem. Hundreds are a pattern regulators can act on.

Where to complain

Here's where I've complained, so you can do the same. Each one takes 10 to 20 minutes. Use your own words and only describe what happened to you.

What I've done

  • October 16, 2026: asked Wix for a refund with proof. Denied about two hours later. My appeal went to a Wix address that can't receive mail.
  • October 17: disputed the charge with my card issuer, and filed a complaint with the Better Business Bureau, which has sent it to Wix.
  • October 18: reported Wix to the U.S. Federal Trade Commission and Canada's Competition Bureau, and sent the evidence to the lawyers behind the California class action and to reporters.

Anyone, anywhere

  • Better Business Bureau (use "File a Complaint" on Wix's profile). Wix answers BBB complaints, and some people get refunds this way.
  • econsumer.gov, for complaints about a company in another country. It's run by a partnership of more than 65 consumer protection agencies around the world.
  • Trustpilot. An honest review warns the next person.
  • And tell me what happened, so it's counted here.

Before you dispute a charge with your bank: if you still have a site, domain or email with Wix, move them first. Wix's Terms say a chargeback can get your account blocked and your domains cancelled. Here's a free guide to moving out safely.

Tell me what happened

It takes about three minutes. I'll put the results together and share them with consumer lawyers, journalists and regulators looking into this.

Results are only shared as totals, like "X people in Y countries." Your name and contact details are never shared unless you say yes to that question at the end.
