The Story
I've been optimizing processes since grade seven, when I mapped my paper route for maximum efficiency. New customer? Re-optimize the entire route from scratch. One address could flip the whole system if it saved time.
That mindset never changed. Thirty years in the Canadian Armed Forces—special operations, Arctic command, UN peacekeeping—and the constant was always the same: find the process, map it, make it better.
The other constant: words. Writing decisions for the Chief of Defence Staff. Writing the only comprehensive guide to CAF grievances. Writing crime fiction set in Belfast because my wife asked for a detective series. Writing AI prompts because that's how you program when you code in plain English.
Now I build AI tools for clients handling sensitive data—healthcare, HR, legal. I run a small publishing house. I still serve in the Army Reserve.
Two threads, one career: the logic of the English language and the drive to optimize every process I touch.
What This Looks Like
AI & Process
Building AI applications for clients who can't afford to get privacy wrong. My core method: de-identify PII so you can use commercial AI without exposing protected information.
- medictate.ai — Built for my brother, an ER physician. Methodical and iterative—tested one output function at a time. Functional in a week, fulfilled its purpose in two. The user wants the tool they want, not the tool the developer wants them to want.
- CanLII Search — Boolean query builder for Canada's largest legal database. Reduces research time by up to 70%.
- Privacy Compliance — PII de-identification strategies for healthcare and HR sectors.
Writing & Publishing
11+ published titles on Amazon. Nonfiction guides, crime fiction, children's literature. Run Crimson PulpFic, an indie press with three active series across seven authors.
- An Airing of Grievances — The only comprehensive guide to CAF grievance management. Six years of experience distilled.
- Chatbot Genius — AI guides for professionals and non-techies.
- DS Rose Gallagher — 5-book Belfast crime series. Written for my wife.
AI Enablement
Helping small businesses and government adopt AI through education-first approaches. The goal: capability transfer, not dependency.
- The British Nanny — Full enablement: ChatGPT training, custom GPT, book publishing guidance, AI-optimized website. The book is now her credibility piece for every prospective parent.
- Ottawa Handiman — $300 revenue in week one on a $297 website build. AI-powered maintenance keeps it current.
- DND AI Platform — $13,000 contract designing airgapped AI training systems. Llama models, GPU specs, enterprise vendor research. Contract awarded.
Government & Analysis
Six years analyzing grievances at every level from Initial Authority to Chief of Defence Staff. The Titanic didn't need more steel—it needed less iceberg.
- 80% time reduction — If you're going to say yes, just say yes. Prioritized yesses based on career impact to grievers. 75% could be handled quickly once we stopped treating them all the same and assessed each on its merits.
- Tiger Team — Led 4 analysts who quadrupled expected output: 100 decisions in 6 months vs. the 54 projected.
- Judicial review validation — Within 12 months, one of our denials withstood Federal Court review—validating the process.
Teaching AI
Since 2024, I've volunteered as a Generative AI instructor with U-Go, teaching AI skills to young women pursuing university degrees in Southeast Asia and Africa.
I developed curriculum for the program, created model lessons now used as the standard, and helped broker a partnership connecting U-Go students with women AI professionals seeking certification hours.
It's one of the ways I put these skills to work beyond client projects.
